If you managed to let Popolon or Aphrodite to die, you can revive the character. Both only once, though. Firstly, get the Salt, then go to the death shrine (near World 3). There, you will find Death in person offering you revive your lover in exchange for 100 arrows, 100 coins and 20 keys:

Because world 9 is quite difficult, it is an idea to sacrifice either character and to revive him/her afterwards. The guardian of world 10 is easy.
